One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, became the big name winner at this year’s Gotham Awards, taking home the most coveted prize of ‘Best Feature’.

The high-octane action epic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Benicio del Toro, among an all-star ensemble cast, has been hotly tipped as one of the best films of the year, which has now been confirmed by it receiving the highest honour at the Gotham Awards on December 1st.

In his brief acceptance speech for the award, Anderson paid tribute to the actors in the film, saying, “You know, you need a good cast to make a good movie, and I got a good one right there.”

Despite the critical acclaim that One Battle After Another has received since it was released in September, the director nevertheless seemed surprised to receive the award, noting, “I wasn’t expecting this. I didn’t know what was going on, but this is great.”

As per the tradition of films that have previously won ‘Best Feature’ at the Gotham Awards, this could potentially stand One Battle After Another in strong contention to win ‘Best Picture’ at the Oscars in 2026. The nominations are revealed on January 22nd, before the ceremony takes place on March 15th.

Elsewhere at the awards, the Iranian director Jafar Panahi came away with the biggest scoop of prizes, winning three awards, including ‘Best Director’ for his film It Was Just An Accident

Additionally, the acting awards went to Sopé Dìrísù for ‘Best Lead Performance’ in My Father’s Shadow, Wunmi Mosaku for ‘Supporting Performance’ in Sinners, and Abou Sangaré for ‘Breakthrough Performance’ for Souleymane’s Story.

Frankenstein director Guillermo del Toro also took to the stage with his cast to accept the ‘Vanguard Tribute’ award, where he made an emphatic speech claiming “fuck AI” while celebrating human artistry.

“I’d like to tell the rest of our extraordinary cast and our crew that the artistry of all of them shines on every single frame of this film that was willfully made by humans, for humans,” he added.
