Morrissey concert in Dallas cut short following stage invasion

The image of Morrissey swinging a bouquet of flowers around while adoring fans invade the stage to hug him is almost as iconic as the various songs he has penned over the years. However, during a recent performance in Fair Park, Dallas, the former Smiths frontman was forced to abandon ship when multiple crowd members leapt up onto the stage during an encore performance of ‘First of the Gang to Die’.

In footage from the gig, on November 2nd, filmed by audience members and promptly shared to social media, Morrissey appears to accept the first stage invaders before becoming somewhat overwhelmed as more and more fans realise their opportunity to get closer to the singer. Pretty quickly, Mozza’s security guards start to fend off the invaders, with one bodyguard appearing to injure himself in the process, and the singer is ushered off stage.

Fans can be heard booing and criticising those who invaded the stage in the videos, causing the show to come to an abrupt halt. Even after the chaos had died down, Morrissey did not return to the stage, seeming to cut his losses with the Dallas crowd.

Morrissey still has a considerable amount of North American tour dates to complete after Dallas, with the next stop scheduled for Little Rock, Arkansas, on November 4th. At present, the stage invasion in Texas has not caused the singer to cancel any of the subsequent American concerts, although it seems unlikely that fans will so brazenly invade the stage after the chaos that was caused in Fair Park.

In recent years, The Smiths’ frontman has often been noted and criticised for his tendency to cancel live appearances and concerts at the very last minute, usually without a valid reason. In contrast, Morrissey performed a particularly impressive set in Texas prior to the abrupt end of his show, including a variety of tracks from his extensive solo career, as well as a few fan favourites from The Smiths era.

‘How Soon Is Now?’, ‘Shoplifters of the World Unite’, and ‘Half a Person’ all featured in the setlist in Texas, forming some indisputable highlights of the, albeit cut-short concert. Although Morrissey has never shied away from performing Smiths compositions at his solo shows, more recent performances have fanned the flames of countless reunion rumours.

Johnny Marr rules out reunion with The Smiths

In short, it seems that fans will not receive a Smiths reunion tour anytime soon. Aside from the fact that bassist Andy Rourke passed away last year, both Morrissey and Johnny Marr are currently enjoying successful solo careers in their own respect. Particularly when taking into account how messy the original break-up of the band was, back in the 1980s, a Smiths reunion show would be an incredibly unlikely thing to happen, particularly within the current climate.

Reportedly, Morrissey floated the idea of a Smiths reunion earlier this year. At the time, the singer released a barbed statement claiming that he was up for reuniting with his former bandmates, but Johnny Marr had “ignored” the offer. In response, the guitarist said, “As for the offer to tour, I didn’t ignore the offer – I said no.” Case closed, at least for the time being.
