Both Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Disney’s live-action remake of Lilo and Stitch have cumulatively pulled in a massive $1 billion at the box office, making them two of the most successful films of the year so far.
Having been open for two weekends, Lilo and Stitch has accumulated a box office total of $611 million, putting it on track to surpass the current biggest family film of 2025, A Minecraft Movie, which had raked in $522.6m at the same time of its release.
Elsewhere, the last instalment of Tom Cruise’s action blockbuster Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning has amassed a $353.8m world total, having had a significant boost when it landed atop the Chinese box office when it released in the country this weekend, bringing in $25.2m of that share.
The figures come as a commercial lift to the eighth Mission: Impossible film, which faced mixed reviews over its faltering plot lines when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
It has, however, fared similarly to its predecessor Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One when it was released two years ago in 2023, which brought in $370.9m within the same release period.
Following its early release, Wes Anderson’s latest directorial effort, The Phoenician Scheme, starring Benicio del Toro and Mia Threapleton, has so far brought in a sum of $7m, again despite mixed critical reviews.
In its review of the film, Far Out described it as “the worst of Wes Anderson”, saying it: “The plot chugs along and grasps at new beats to justify its existence, but it feels entirely unmotivated and uncompelling, with no emotional depth to the central relationship to make us care about anything happening on screen.”
