Director Matt Reeves has revealed he’s finally finished the script for The Batman 2. The update comes after delays to the original release date.
Reeves shared a photo of the finished script on Instagram on June 27th, writing in the caption, “Partners in Crime (Fighters),” while tagging co-writer Mattson Tomlin.
Batman 2 will be released on October 21st, 2027, after initially being announced for October 2nd, 2026. DC Studios CEO and Superman director James Gunn previously revealed that the delay was due to the incomplete script.
“The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script,” he said in December. “Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”
The movie, officially titled The Batman – Part II, is scheduled to begin production in the third quarter of 2025.
Gunn recently defended Reeves over the slow progress of the film. “People should get off Matt’s nuts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it,” he told Entertainment Weekly earlier in June.
Adding, “That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”
Reeves’ first Batman film was released in March 2022. It starred Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, and Peter Sarsgaard. The movie made $772.3million at the box office off a budget of around $185–200m.
