Alternative pop duo Magdalena Bay have shared a cover of David Bowie’s iconic hit ‘Ashes to Ashes’.

The Los Angeles pair were appearing on the Australian radio station Triple J and their acoustic performance programme Like a Version on March 28th. During the broadcast, they played their own song ‘Image’ before covering the iconic n1980 Bowie tune.

Magdalena Bay, comprised of members Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, explained after their performance why the song was so significant to them. Lewin said: “It’s a great, kind of weird experimental pop song that I think we took a lot of inspiration from,” before Tenenbaum added, “We’re always just kind of listening to it, it’s never really left our rotation of songs that we love.”

On Bowie’s blazing persona itself, Tenenbaum also said: “I drew a lot of influence from his ideas of being an artist and what it means to create art. I found [it] very inspiring as we were going into the creation of our latest album, Imaginal Disk.”

The singer continued: “It’s tough, because when you love a song so much and you know what you love about it and then you also want make it your own a little bit, it’s like, ‘How much should you really mess with it?’”

That latest album Tenenbaum mentioned, Imaginal Disk, marked the sophomore effort from the band when it was released on August 23rd, 2024, drawing on the genres of synth pop, dance pop, and electronic rock, much like Bowie’s own offerings.

Magdalena Bay are set to embark on a US tour in the coming weeks, and will also visit the UK later in the year.
