On March 26th, Lady Gaga recently announced dates for her extensive Mayhem arena tour across North America and Europe. Shortly after, it was revealed that surf brand Lost International had launched a legal complaint against the songwriter.

Lost International are alleging that designs used for Gaga’s album, tour and merchandise are “substantially similar if not nearly identical to” their own trademark, which has been held since 2015. This $100 million lawsuit centres around a specific clothing line produced by the surf company, called ‘Mayhem’, which features a logo that the company claims is similar to the design used by Lady Gaga.

In the lawsuit, the surf brand claimed the songwriter “attempted to misappropriate the ‘Mayhem’ name, trademark, and stylized mark by releasing an album called Mayhem, launching a tour with that same name, and selling clothing and accessories with that name,” according to information obtained by Rolling Stone.

Reportedly, the brand had attempted to contact Lady Gaga and her team prior to filing the lawsuit on Tuesday. However, these attempted communications were not returned by Gaga’s team, leading the lawsuit to claim that the songwriter had “failed and refused, and continues to fail and refuse to cease her willful and blatant infringing.”

In response to the $100 million lawsuit, the singer’s attorney, Orin Snyder, argued, “Lady Gaga’s Mayhem soared to No. 1 and shattered records, a testament to her unmatched talent and global impact.”

Snyder continued, “It’s disappointing —but hardly surprising — that someone is now attempting to capitalize on her success with a baseless lawsuit over the name ‘Mayhem’. This is nothing more than an opportunistic and meritless abuse of the legal system.”

Lady Gaga’s arena dates are due to commence a world tour this spring, beginning at Coachella Festival in April. This year, she will visit North America, Mexico, Brazil, Singapore, and the UK, before concluding the tour in Europe with a residency in Paris.
