Julian Holloway, the British actor best known for his various roles in the Carry On franchise, has passed away at the age of 80 following a brief illness.
The son of Stanley Holloway, who played Alfred P Doolittle in both the theatrical and film versions of My Fair Lady, the actor began his career in the early 1960s with small film and television roles.
Initially starring in uncredited roles in acclaimed movies like A Hard Day’s Night, The Knack…And How To Get It, and The Pleasure Girls, the actor then landed his first Carry On role in 1987 with Carry On Doctor, playing Doctor Simmons.
The popular British comedy franchise reached its peak in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, with Holloway appearing in many of the film series’ most popular titles, including Carry On Camping, Carry On Up The Khyber, and Carry On Loving.
While his film roles became more sporadic over the years, he continued appearing in television shows like Doctor Who, The Bill, Beverly Hills, 90210, and animated shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Regular Show.
During the 1970s he met Tessa Dahl, the daughter of popular children’s author Roald Dahl and actor Patrcia Neal. While they never married, he and Dahl had one daughter, the model and author Sophie Dahl.
He was married twice in his life, first to Zena Walker in 1971, and then to Debbie Wheeler in 1991 before divorcing five years later.
The actor, who made his final film appearance in 2011’s Rum Diary starring Johnny Depp, died in Dorset on February 16th, 2025.
