Veteran American singer Johnny Mathis has announced he will retire from performing after his current run of concerts owing to “age and memory issues.”

The classic crooner, who is quickly approaching 90 years old, had been due to continue performing throughout the rest of the year but will now see out his final performance on May 18th in Englewood, New Jersey, because of his health problems.

The news of the singer’s cancelled concerts was announced on his Facebook page, in a statement that said: “It’s with sincere regret that due to Mr Mathis’ age and memory issues which have accelerated, we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts.”

It added: “Johnny Mathis and his entire staff send their heartfelt gratitude to all Mathis fans worldwide for your continued love and support of his music! It’s truly been ‘Wonderful, Wonderful.’”

The statement also noted that limited tickets were still available for his existing concerts until May 18th, and all those originally scheduled after that would be refunded.

Mathis bows out from his life on the stage after a seismic seven-decade career, beginning with the release of his eponymous debut album way back in 1956, having been inspired by the likes of Nat King Cole. Since then, he has gone on to produce no less than 73 records over the course of his tenure – most recently with the festive effort Christmas Time is Here in 2023.

Becoming a classic standard singer and subsequently one of the best-selling artists of the 20th century, Mathis has been recognised with honours such as inductions into the Grammy Hall of Fame three separate times, for the likes of massive hits like ‘Chances Are’ and ‘When a Child is Born’. He has also been the recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
