John Lydon has again criticised the current incarnation of Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter, labelling the punk band as “woke”.

Since Sex Pistols founding members Glen Matlock, Steve Jones, and Paul Cook reunited the band with former Gallows frontman Carter in 2024, Lydon has been an outspoken critic of the group. He was also locked in a legal feud with his former bandmates prior to the reformation regarding the Disney+ series, Pistol.

In his latest comments, Lydon referenced the Disney+ series which led to him going to the High Court in a failed bid to prevent the series from using the band’s music.

When asked if he’d ever return to the band, Lydon told the PA (via The Independent): “Never, not after what I consider their dirty deeds, let them wallow in Walt Disney woke expectations.”

In a further dig at his former bandmates, Lydon said: “They’ve killed the content, or done their best to, and turned the whole thing into a rubbish, childishness, and that’s unacceptable.”

The former Sex Pistols singer added of the band’s legacy: “Sorry, I’m not going to give a helping hand to this any longer, as far as I am concerned, I am the Pistols, and they’re not.”

Earlier this year, Lydon revealed that he was angry upon discovering the Sex Pistols had reunited with Carter as their vocalist, stating, “When I first heard that the Sex Pistols were touring this year without me, it pissed me off.

He also compared their show to karaoke, saying, “They’re trying to trivialise the whole show to get away with karaoke, but in the long term, I think you’ll see who has the value and who doesn’t.”

Last month, the Sex Pistols with Frank Carter performed at the 100 Club in London with Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller among those in the intimate crowd. They also played a special show at London’s Royal Albert Hall in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust.
