As the stars of film, music and comedy gathered to celebrate 50 years of Saturday Night Live at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall on Friday, February 15th, a video emerged of Jerry Seinfeld saying, “I don’t care about Palestine.”
The video was captured by a notorious provocateur, Subway DJ, who does ambush interviews with celebrities, posing for selfies with them before launching controversial or confrontational questions. He’s previously asked notable lawyers what they were doing on Jeffrey Epstein’s island or questioned young Republicans leaving a gala.
But in this case, the target was Jerry Seinfeld, the writer, actor, and comedian whose hit TV show Seinfeld starred Saturday Night Live staple Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The interviewer appeared to catch him with the same selfie trick on his way to the party celebrating the show.
As Seinfeld poses for a selfie, the interviewer says, “Free Palestine.” When the actor doesn’t respond, he adds, “Maybe?” to which Seinfeld is captured, stating, “I don’t care about Palestine,” before walking off.
The actor has routinely supported Israel during this conflict. In October 2023, an Instagram post of his read, “I lived and worked on a Kibbutz in Israel when I was 16, and I have loved our Jewish homeland ever since,” adding, “We survive and flourish no matter what. I will always stand with Israel and the Jewish people.”
In April 2024, he maintained that stance in an interview with GQ where he said, “I don’t preach about it. I have my personal feelings about it that I discuss privately,” continuing, “It’s not part of what I can do comedically, but my feelings are very strong.”
However, following other recent controversies surrounding the actor, the callousness of his new comment about Palestine has left the internet in shock, with Subway DJ’s video racking up over a million views overnight.
