Jeff Goldblum has addressed the future of one of his most iconic characters, Dr Ian Malcolm from the Jurassic Park franchise, suggesting that he may have “ridden off into the sunset.”
Goldblum made his first appearance as Ian Malcolm in the original Jurassic Park film in 1993. Directed by blockbuster legend Steven Spielberg, the sci-fi flick introduced audiences to the colossal franchise and became an instant hit, taking in over $1billion at the box office.
Since then, Goldblum has reprised his role as Ian Malcolm several times. He starred in the first sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, in 1997 and appeared in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2018. His most recent outing as the character was just two years ago in Jurassic World Dominion.
However, it seems that Goldblum has now decided to leave the Jurassic Park franchise and Ian behind him. During a conversation with Total Film, the actor stated, “I think Ian Malcolm may have ridden off into the sunset. Maybe.”
Goldblum then alluded to the next film in the franchise, which is set to arrive next year. “Because this next one,” he commented, “my friend, Scarlett Johansson, and my new friend, Jonathan Bailey from Wicked, I think, are taking up the reins.”
The actor seemed to be referring to Jurassic World Rebirth, the seventh instalment in the franchise, which is scheduled for release in the summer of 2025. Gareth Edwards has directed the upcoming film, which features a star-studded cast. Johansson and Bailey will be joined by Mahershala Ali and Rupert Friend in their jurassic adventures.
“And I can’t wait to see what they do,” Goldblum concluded, “I think that’s a good idea.” The former Jurassic Park star seems happy to hand the baton to a new generation of stars.
Meanwhile, Goldblum is currently promoting his most recent endeavour, Wicked, Jon M Chu’s adaptation of the musical of the same name. Goldblum will star as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, while popstar Ariana Grande takes on the role of Galinda and Cynthia Ervo plays Elphaba. Bailey, who will take the reins from Goldblum in the Jurassic Park franchise, plays Fiyero.
The musical adaptation is set for release on November 22nd in the United States, and a sequel has already been confirmed. Chu will also helm Wicked Part Two, which is expected to arrive in November 2025. The trailer for the first instalment is out now.
