Jacob Elordi is in discussions to star in Ridley Scott’s upcoming post-apocalyptic thriller The Dog Stars, replacing Paul Mescal who was initially intended for the role but encountered a scheduling conflict.

The film is about a deadly virus that wipes out humankind. Initially, Mescal was set to star. However, he will no longer be involved in the project as it clashes with the Sam Mendes set of biopics about The Beatles, which is set to feature the Irish actor Paul McCartney.

The Dog Stars is based on the 2012 novel written by Peter Heller, with the screenplay being adapted by Mark L Smith, the writer behind Twisters. The film will be Scott’s next project after a Bee-Gees biopic for Paramount. If negotiations are successful, Elordi will play a pilot called Hig, who forms a friendship with a gunman as they try to outlast a group of scavengers.

After a conversation with Christopher Nolan in December following a Gladiator II screening, Scott implied that Mescal’s involvement in the project wasn’t set in stone, saying, “Paul is actually stacked up, doing the Beatles next. So I may have to let him go”.

While Mescal is booked on multiple projects, Elordi also has a packed schedule, with the final season of Euphoria and the Wuthering Heights adaptation alongside Margot Robbie shooting in the first quarter of 2025. Scott is also looking at a similar time period for the production of The Dog Stars, so these time constraints may also contribute to whether or not Elordi can commit to the project. However, Variety have confirmed talks are underway regarding Elordi signing on to Scott’s upcoming film.

Elordi has had a varied career in recent years, working with directors such as Sofia Coppola, Paul Schrader and Emerald Fennell. After a breakout role in the Netflix film The Kissing Booth, the actor recently played Elvis Presley in Priscilla and has also been cast in Guillermo Del Toro’s upcoming Frankenstein.

As well as this, Elordi also starred in Sean Price Williams’ 2023 film The Sweet East, working with Ayo Edebiri and Simon Rex.
