There are many films to have been released with Jack Black in the lead role that has garnered die-hard fans over the years, but perhaps Richard Linklater’s 2003 comedy School of Rock is the most popular.

Starring Black, Joan Cusack, Mike White (who also wrote the film), and Sarah Silverman, the film focuses on a failing rock guitarist who takes a job as a substitute teacher at a prep school despite having no experience, in order to pay his rent.

In his class, Dewey Finn notices that his students all have musical talent and puts them together in a band in an attempt to win a Battle of the Bands competition, using the money to pay his bills.

In a new interview with JOE, Black has revealed that he would be willing to return to his beloved role and make a sequel movie, noting, “I wish there’d be a School of Rock 2 Electric Boogaloo. I’m ready.”

Clearly, Black is so ready for a School of Rock sequel that he’s even prepared a prospective title for the film. The Electric Boogaloo title, though, is, in fact, a reference to the sequel to the break-dancing movie Breakin’ that came out in 1984.

“You know Mike White wrote the first one, and he’s a genius,” Black admitted. “And we’d have to have Mike White back in the saddle, but he’s real busy right now with White Lotus, the best show on TV.”

School of Rock grossed $131million from a $35million budget and received widespread critical acclaim, with many critics offering high praise for Black performance and comic ability. Prior to the release of Pitch Perfect 2, the film was the highest-grossing music-themed comedy movie of all time.

As of yet, though, there has been no sequel. A stage musical adaptation launched on Broadway in 2015 and has since been across the world, plus a television adaptation that ran for three seasons on Nickelodeon between 2016 and 2018.

It looks as if Black is prepared to put himself forward for a sequel movie, though, if Mike White would be able to free himself from writing more seasons of his comedy-drama TV show The White Lotus. Black’s next film is a comedy sequel and will see him voice act as his beloved panda character Po in Kung Fu Panda 4.
