A number of Hollywood stars, including Jeff Bridges and Mark Ruffalo, have raised millions by participating in a fundraising Zoom call in support of likely Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris.
Although Harris is yet to be officially announced as the candidate for the Democrats in the upcoming election, it looks almost certain that the current Vice President will stand against Republican nominee Donald Trump on November 5th.
Initially, President Biden was set to stand but on July 21st, the politician reluctantly announced a change of heart following growing pressure from the Democratic Party over his poll rating and fears over his mental fitness after numerous high-profile errors.
In a statement, Biden said it had been the “greatest honour of my life to serve as your president” but believed he needed to step aside to give his party the best chance of defeating Trump. Biden continued: “While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.”
In addition to Biden endorsing Harris for office, she has also received support from the Obama’s and Clinton’s. Hollywood has also grouped around the politician, as the ‘White Guys for Harris’ Zoom call on July 29th proved.
As well as featuring the likes of Ruffalo and Bridges, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Gad, Sam Astin, Mark Hamill and Josh Groban were among the other stars to take part in the conversation, which was broadcast live on YouTube. Furthermore, senior politicians such as North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Pete Buttigieg, who could possibly become Harris’ running mate in the election.
During the call, which raised $4 million, The Big Lebowski star Bridges shared his reasoning for joining ‘White Guys for Harris’, stating, “I gotta laugh because I accepted the invitation not for being white, but because I’m a dude you know?”
Bridges also discussed claims made by the Democrats that the upcoming election is a “fight” for democracy, stating, “It’s not so much a fight, but a surrender to higher thoughts of how we want the future to turn out. That’s just my opinion, man.”
Elsewhere on the call, Cooper highlighted the importance of fighting for women’s rights in the upcoming election, claiming, “Real men respect women, their careers, and it’s pretty clear that Donald Trump and JD Vance don’t. From Trump’s sexual assaults to Vance’s misogynistic comments, it’s pretty clear that disrespect of women permeates Donald Trump land.”
Cooper’s comments arrive after Jennifer Aniston condemned Vance for stating that “we’re effectively run in this country by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives.”
Taking to Instagram, the actor shared: “All I can say is… Mr Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day. I hope she will not need to turn to IVF as a second option. Because you are trying to take that away from her, too.”
