Haim – ‘Relationships’
After four years, Haim have made their long-awaited return. Clearly preparing to launch their new era, the first since 2021’s Women In Music Pt.III, the band have finally shared their new single, ‘Relationships’.
It’s got absolutely everything you could want from a Haim song. When the band first broke out back in 2012 with tracks like ‘Forever’ and ‘Don’t Save Me,’ it was the infectious indie energy of their music that captured hearts. Their lyricism hooked people in, too, as the three sisters have always written fun and often funny tracks, full of razor-sharp observations, poetic phrasing, and a good dose of quick wit.
But their musicality was also a huge part of it. As three sisters who grew up playing in a family band, few other groups could hope to compete with the natural and easy synergy they have. Aided by their multi-instrumentalist skill, but powered by Danielle Haim’s guitar and vocals, Este’s unique bass lines and Alana jumping between guitars, percussion and more; the three of them have always been able to create something not only energetic and engaging, but interesting.
‘Relationships’ has all of that. Este delivers one of her best basslines to date, heard dancing under the whole song. Danielle’s vocals sound better than ever, returning their easy-breezy California-cool energy to the airwaves as she plays in her upper register with seemingly no effort at all.
Over in the rhythm section, and as the master of the band’s details, Alana’s beats drive the whole track as well as adding the keys that hold it all down. Co-produced by Danielle as well, it’s clear the band are back to reclaim their crown as one of indie’s finest acts.
’Haim girl summer’ is surely the new social trend that awaits the world—for better or for worse. Perhaps this summer, the brat green will be replaced by Haim’s own it-girl energy, especially after dropping this ode to independence. “I hear a voice in my head / And it keeps asking, ‘Why am I in this relationship?’” the band sing in the song all about being non-commital and questioning the whole monogamy thing.
Perfectly primed to soundtrack the weather warming up and the sky getting bluer—it’s a welcome return from pop-rock’s resurgent heroes.
