The Grammys marked a monumental night for The Cure, after the band took home their two first ever awards from the ceremony, having been together for half a century.
The iconic rock band won the prizes for ‘Best Alternative Music Performance’ for ‘Alone’, as well as ‘Best Alternative Music Album’ for their massive comeback record, Songs of a Lost World.
Remarkably, this was the first occasion that The Cure have taken home Grammy Awards in their career, having previously been nominated for the prizes but always being pipped to the post by other artists.
They were last nominated in 2001, again in the ‘Best Alternative Music Album’ category, for Bloodflowers, but were beaten to the award by Radiohead’s Kid A. Similarly, despite scooping a nod for the same prize in 1993 for their seminal album Wish, it was Tom Waits who took home the award for Bone Machine.
Despite the ceremony marking a historic night in the entirety of the band’s enormous career, they were sadly unable to attend the prizegiving in LA as they were attending the funeral of their former guitarist and keyboardist Perry Bamonte, who tragically passed away on December 24th last year, aged 65.
Although they weren’t able to receive their awards in the flesh, The Cure’s frontman Robert Smith still sent a note of thanks in recognition of the seismic event, which was read out by the ‘Best Alternative Music Album’ category presenter, Jesse Welles.
Thanking the Grammys for the “wonderful award”, Smith went on to acknowledge all the band’s supporters, crew, and fans of so many years: He said: “And most importantly, all the Cure fans around the world who came to our Lost World shows and enjoyed our Lost World music. Without you, none of this would be possible.”
Songs of a Lost World, released in November 2024, marked the first new music from The Cure in some 16 years and was critically celebrated as one of the best albums of that year. Aside from the Grammys, the record also saw the band nominated for ‘Album of the Year’, ‘Group of the Year’, and ‘Alternative/Rock Act’ at the 2025 Brit Awards.
The success is set to continue for the band into 2026, with a string of European festival dates lined up for this summer, on top of a string of huge UK outdoor shows in Cardiff, Belfast, Manchester, and Edinburgh.
