Glen Powell, who appeared as Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick, has confirmed Top Gun 3 is in the works. The American actor recently provided an update on the production.
Powell is one of the most in-demand figures in Hollywood and is currently on the path to cementing himself as an A-list talent. His role in Top Gun: Maverick marked a critical step on his journey, helping him reach this destination. Over the last 12 months, he’s appeared in the smash hit romantic-comedy Anyone But You, Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, and most recently, Twisters.
Due to the success of his recent projects, Powell is the name on every casting director’s wish list and his forthcoming films include A24’s Huntington, Edgar Wright’s upcoming remake of The Running Man, as well as the upcoming Hulu comedy series, Chad Powers. Furthermore, he’s also set to reprise his role as Hangman in Top Gun 3.
At this stage, it remains unknown when the movie will go into production, but during a new appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Powell confirmed “I have a date” for when he begins work.
Teasing the highly-anticipated movie, Powell added: “There is going to be some fun stuff being announced soon…but it was confidential to me. I talk to (Joseph) Kosinski, Cruise and Jerry (Bruckheimer) all the time. There is stuff happening and it sounds very exciting.”
Despite previously claiming to have a “date”, Powell then backtracked by stating, “I don’t know when I’ll be going back…I’m sure there is a jet waiting for me sometime in the future.”
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Tom Cruise has started plotting a third Top Gun film, which is currently in development at Paramount. However, until Powell’s comments, little information had surfaced about the forthcoming project.
Whenever Top Gun 3 does arrive, it will be expected to compete with Top Gun: Maverick which was a roaring success in box office terms, generating close to $1.5 billion. Currently, Cruise is currently occupied with shooting the new Mission Impossible movie, but once that film has finished, he could potentially focus on the Top Gun series once again.
Although Powell’s career was enhanced significantly by Top Gun: Maverick, the same can’t be said for Manny Jacinto, who recently addressed being cut from the final cut of the movie.
Despite his lack of dialogue, Jacinto still mined positives from the project, stating to GQ: “There was this sense of where the film was going [on set], like I can see them focusing the camera more on these [other] guys and not taking so much time on our scenes. Fortunately, it still was a great experience – you get to see this huge machine at work, see how Tom Cruise works, and you get to be a small part of this huge franchise.”
The Good Place star also claimed that “Tom Cruise is writing stories for Tom Cruise” and the whole experience “kind of fuels you” as an actor.
