American soul singer Gladys Knight worried fans after having to cancel a show on short notice last weekend for health reasons, but the musical icon has issued a reassuring update.
The 80-year-old had been set to perform at the Florida Theatre on March 8th when she was taken unwell “very suddenly”, according to a statement released by the venue.
They added that the ‘Empress of Soul’ and another crew member were treated by medics before being taken off to hospital, hence “necessitate(ing) the sudden cancellation of the show.”
Now, the legendary ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ singer has taken to Instagram to reassure fans that she is on the road to recovery, posting a red carpet picture of herself with the caption: “Hi my loves! I have that flu that is going around and am already feeling better. I’ll see everyone real soon and appreciate the good wishes.”
Representatives for Knight previously said prior to her new statement, “We hope to reschedule the show, but it’s too early to know about that… we should know more early next week.”
This latest string of shows that Knight is currently performing comes despite the singer previously plotting to give up life on the road. International farewell tours have taken place consistently since 2009, but if this latest incident is anything to go by, there’s nothing that will keep the soul superstar down for long.
Having trodden the boards of the musical world since the late 1950s alongside her family band, The Pips, Knight rose to stratospheric fame with the likes of Marvin Gaye and Dionne Warwick as her closest contemporaries. Since the 1980s, she has embarked on an equally successful solo career, marking her as one of the genre’s all-time greatest exports.
