Actor Eric Dane is now in full-time care due to his ongoing battle with the incurable neurodegenerative disorder ALS.

Dane, who starred in Charmed and Grey’s Anatomy, revealed that he had been diagnosed with ALS, which is also commonly known as motor neurone disease, in April.

At the time, Dane said he was “fortunate” to be able to currently continue working, and that he is “looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week”.

Additionally, last month, Dane made a guest appearance in the medical drama Brilliant Minds, playing a firefighter who has been diagnosed with ALS.

Now, his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, has discussed Dane’s health struggles. Gayheart previously filed for divorce in 2018, but dismissed the notion in March due to her husband’s battle with ALS. They share two children together.

In an essay for The Cut, Gayheart shared of her husband’s condition, “Eric has 24/7 nurses now.”

She also opened up on the struggle to get approval for full-time care with insurance companies, writing, “With the nurses, the woman from his insurance said to me, ‘You can keep applying, and I’ll keep denying,’ I was like, Oh? F that.

Gayheart continued, “I made it my mission. I was ‘locked in,’ as the kids would say. I crashed out, and then I locked it in. And we got it approved after two appeals.”

Despite being separated, Gayheart is on hand to cover care shifts for Dane whenever needed and stated that his week is divided into 21 shifts.

The actor said of their bond, “It’s all been really positive, and I think it’s nice for the kids to see maybe a softer side of us. It’s not that they have the hopes of us being together — kids always dream of their parents getting back together, and I think now ours don’t because they understand the reality of the situation.”

She added, “And hopefully, what they see instead are two adults who are trying to be mature and focus on what’s important.”

Gayheart admitted their relationship is “very complicated”, which she said is “confusing for people”, before stressing, “Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love.”

In June, Dane said of Gayheart, “I talk to her every day. We have managed to become better friends and better parents. And she is … probably my biggest champion and my most stalwart supporter. And I lean on her.”
