Eagles have officially broken a new record, as their 1976 compilation album, Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, has officially sold over 40 million units in the US.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has confirmed the stats that officially make this the best-selling album of all time in the US.

They also hold the record for the third-best-selling album in the US; their seminal 1976 record, Hotel California, is now 28x platinum. Michael Jackson’s Thriller takes the second spot.

Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 was released on February 17th, 1976. Now, to celebrate the new RIAA certification, the band has released a crystal-clear, 180-gram vinyl edition of the album.

As per The Independent, founding member, drummer, and singer Don Henley has shared of the new release, “In an age, in a culture, where everything seems to become more ephemeral, by the day, it is gratifying to have been part of something that endures, even for fifty years. We are amazed and grateful.”

On January 23rd, the band will embark on 12 final shows at the iconic Las Vegas Sphere, which will set a new record for the longest-running residency at the state-of-the-art venue. Their run of shows, titled ‘Eagles – Live In Concert At Sphere’, kicked off on September 20th, 2024, and has entertained over 700,000 fans across 44 performances.

The band, who were inducted into the Rock &andRoll Hall of Fame in 1998 and became a Kennedy Center honoree in 2016, will have performed a total of 56 shows at the Sphere, which is part of their extended farewell tour.

They previously said of their decision to retire: “The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds.”

They also reflected on their career to date, continuing: “Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years. We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”

The band’s Vince Gill, who joined Eagles in 2017 following the death of founding member Glenn Frey, was honoured with the ‘Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award’ at last years’ Country Music Association Awards on November 19th in Nashville.
