Does Tom Hardy lead a secret double life as a rapper?

We’ve all got those sides of us that people are often surprised to learn about. Perhaps it’s an interest in a particular band or era of cinema that people wouldn’t expect from you, or maybe it’s a niche love of a certain historical event or even a special skill. Sometimes it’s shame that holds us back from openly embracing every facet of our interests, or maybe it’s a desire to retain a level of mystery – it’s no fun letting everyone know everything about us. It’s good to keep people guessing.

For Tom Hardy, one of Britain’s most popular actors, there’s a side to him that he prefers to keep quiet, although it’s one that he has let slip over the years. Aside from acting in everything from beloved shows like Peaky Blinders to blockbusters such as Venom, Hardy seems to have found the time to rap.

Back when Hardy was young, before his breakthrough performance in Bronson or even his very early television performances in the likes of Band of Brothers and The Virgin Queen, he could be found modelling and making music. With his pal Edward Tracy, the actor made a mixtape called Falling on Your Arse in 1999, which was recorded under the name Tommy No 1 + Eddie Too Tall.

Blending samples and classic hip-hop beats, the mixtape is actually pretty good, although fans of the actor weren’t able to hear it until 2018, when Tracy uploaded it onto the internet. It seems as though Hardy could’ve had a promising career as a musician, but he didn’t have enough faith in himself.

He once revealed that he “started out rapping when I was 14 or 15. Because I come from a nice middle-class neighbourhood, it was a very hard sell. And I wasn’t very good! I used to be with the guy who managed Leela James and Lauryn Hill, Pras, the Fugees and all that. I worked out with Warren Riker and Gordon Williams. I’ve recorded loads of stuff but it’s never been released.”

Instead, Hardy has become a very successful actor, but his interest in rap and hip-hop has clearly never left him. When the EP Good Guys, Bad Guys by Czarface was released a few years ago, several tracks could be heard in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Of course, certain fans were quick to get their detective hats on, theorising that Hardy had some involvement in the project.

A British artist who goes by the name of Frankie Pulitzer and Face Puller can be heard in several of the tracks, which sparked curiosity when Hardy changed his Instagram bio to ‘Face Puller’. The fact that Czarface was asked to create music for the film in which Hardy played the main character, paired with his background in making music, points to the actor secretly being Frankie Pulitzer.

It seems as though Hardy has been planning his re-entry into the music scene for a while, stating in 2011, “I’ve got albums, man. My best friend Peanut, he grew up in the south Bronx. He’s a very good MC and we still play. It’ll come out in a film one day, it’ll come out in a character somewhere.”
