During their performance at the Sonora Stage at Coachella on April 13th, Circle Jerks frontman Keith Morris called for “an army of Luigi’s” in reference to Luigi Mangione.
In December, Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside of a hotel in New York City. Mangione was later identified as the suspect and has since been indicted on eleven state charges and faces four federal charges, including first-degree murder.
After playing ‘Coup D’Etat,’ Morris, frontman of the Los Angeles hardcore veterans, spoke about the violent lyrics in the song, which include the line “kill all,” and explained why he does not believe that’s the best course of action for these current times.
He told those in attendance (via SF Gate): “That song, that last line, ends with ‘kill all.’ That’s a pretty fucking ugly statement. In ugly times. Do not think that we encourage that.”
Nevertheless, Morris then spoke about Mangione’s alleged actions, and added, “What we do encourage, what would be totally fucking happening, would be an army of Luigis.”
Elsewhere during their set, Morris explained that he’s no longer able to see his sister after she voted for “that guy” at the last US election, in reference to Donald Trump, and described her as a “white Christian nationalist”.
Coachella had plenty of political moments during the weekend. Irish trio Kneecap were censored on the live stream for leading the Californian crowd into a chant of “Maggie’s in a box”, celebrating the death of former British PM Margaret Thatcher. They also claimed their planned message in support of Gaza was not shown on the screen behind them.
Meanwhile, Green Day changed the lyrics to ‘Jesus of Suburbia’ to support the people of Palestine with Billie Joe Armstrong singing, “Runnin’ away from pain, like the kids from Palestine/ Tales from another broken home,” instead of the usual lyrics, “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimised.”
