Ahead of the second weekend of Coachella, set to commence on April 19th, the festival has announced details of a surprise set from hip-hop star Kid Cudi.
Shortly before the first instalment of the 2024 incarnation of the iconic Californian event, Coachella revealed Vampire Weekend would be joining the star-studded line-up. However, the indie band, who earlier this month released their long-awaited fifth album, Only God Was Above Us, won’t be returning to the desert for weekend two.
During their last-minute appearance, Vampire Weekend surprisingly brought out an Abraham Lincoln impersonator and also Paris Hilton, who joined the band to enjoy a game of cornhole.
Whether Cudi has any other similar tricks up his sleeve remains to be seen, but he is set to play the Sahara Tent at 5:10pm PDT until 5:50pm PDT on April 21st. The festival announced his inclusion by sharing the stage times on social media with the caption, “On the pursuit of happiness.”
Cudi has a storied history with Coachella, first appearing at the festival in 2014. Five years later, the rapper returned to California to headline the Sahara Tent, and half a decade on, he’s now set to play the same stage once again.
Notably, during Cudi’s last show at Coachella, he paid a poignant tribute to recently departed rappers Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle. Before ending his set with ‘Pursuit of Happiness’, he told the crowd to sing “as loud as y’all can”, and said, “This next one, I want to dedicate this to Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle.”
The second weekend of Coachella is set to be headlined by Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator and Doja Cat. However, all eyes will be on Blur, who are set to take to the Coachella Stage on April 20th, and will hope for a more energetic crowd than they were granted during their first performance.
Blur frontman Damon Albarn didn’t seem to have high hopes ahead of the show, when asked about the set before taking to the stage, he admitted to American radio station KROQ, “I don’t know how it will go.”
“It’s a weird one Coachella when it comes to audience. It’s hard to know,” Albarn continued, claiming that the crowd are “on their own planet.”
In the middle of the gig, Albarn was met with silence when trying to start a singalong during ‘Girls & Boys’, and in response, the frontman took it upon himself to lambast the Californian crowd. “You’re never seeing us again, so you might as well fucking sing it. Know what I’m saying?” he said, claiming that the band will never return to the festival. However, they will once again perform at Coachella this coming weekend.
