Charli XCX reveals original pitch for ‘Brat’ movie: “I was just not really into that”

Ahead of the release of her upcoming concert mockumentary, The Moment, Charli XCX has revealed why she turned down the original pitch for the Brat-inspired movie.

Speaking to Variety, the ‘Apple’ singer admitted that she “was approached to make a more traditional tour film around the ‘Brat’ shows I was doing.”

However, the original pitch “kind of felt like a way to elongate the life span of the album for my record label. I was just not really into that.”

The Essex-born musician admitted that she wanted to investigate the form itself, instead of playing it straight: “I was only interested in flipping the form of something quite traditional.”

Alongside Charli, the mockumentary stars Pillion actor Alexander Skarsgård, I Love LARachel Sennott, Hailey Benton Gates, Jamie Demetriou, Kate Berlant, and Rosanna Arquette, as well as a cameo from Kylie Jenner.

In the new interview, Charli elaborated, “I was thinking of how I could put a spin on a long-form film about what I had experienced throughout the album cycle. This is where I landed, this satirical take not only on the music industry but myself.”

This technique, she shared, “Felt like a way into talking about pop culture, fame and the loss of art the second you put something out. This felt like a rich ground to breed ideas.”

The musician expanded on some of these ruminations in a recent Substack, in which she wrote that “being a pop star has its pros and cons,” adding: “You get to feel special, but you also have to at points feel embarrassed by how stupid the whole thing is.”

The film had its first screening at the Sundance Festival in Utah. Her other upcoming projects include a dark comedy titled The Gallerist and an erotic thriller, I Want Your Sex, from director Gregg Araki.
