Box Office: ‘Snow White’ awakens with $16m opening day

Disney’s new live-action Snow White has topped the box office this week after earning $16million from Friday, as well as preview screenings at over 4200 venues. This is high enough to set Snow White on track to achieve an opening weekend of $45m.

If Snow White manages to achieve these opening weekend projections, it will be the second-biggest debut of the year, just behind Captain America: Brave New World. Similar to its Marvel counterpart, the Snow White film had a huge budget, with production costing around $250m. The climb to profitability remains steep for the picture.

Disney’s films have varying runs, as their opening weekend doesn’t seem to reflect the picture’s success over time. For instance, Mufasa: The Lion King had an opening weekend of $35m but ended up making $700m worldwide. Meanwhile, Dumbo had a $45m opening weekend but only took $353m worldwide.

In order to be considered a theatrical success, Snow White would have to accomplish a feat similar to Mufasa’s. This could be an issue, given Mufasa was released in the run-up to Christmas when more people tend to go to the cinema.

There are other problems that Snow White faces, as there has been controversy surrounding the movie’s star, Rachel Zegler, and her relationship with her co-star, Gal Gadot. Whether the movie will be changed has also sparked some form of an online culture war, so much so that the press access for the premiere was heavily stripped back.

At the box office, Snow White is up against the new Robert De Niro film, which sees the actor play two identical, yet unrelated, gang leaders in New York. The Alto Knights have had a very disappointing opening, only bringing in $1.17m on Friday and across previews.
