Blondie have confirmed they will release a new album in 2025, marking their first full-length release since Pollinator in 2017.
The news was revealed in a recent social media post by the band’s guitarist, Chris Stein, who has confirmed that he’s heavily involved with the record despite cutting back on touring commitments in recent years.
On BlueSky, Stein uploaded a black and white photo of Blondie’s lead singer, Debbie Harry and the Grammy-winning producer, John Congleton. Accompanying the photo were the simple words, “With John Congleton. New Blondie record year.” Stein posted a similar photo in October when he uploaded a photo of Harry onto Instagram with the caption, “New Blondie album next year.”
The team has all worked together previously, as Congleton also played a pivotal role in producing Blondie’s most recent album, Pollinator, which was released in 2017. Given his previous experience on albums such as St Vincent’s debut and on projects with Death Cab for Cutie and Angel Olsen, Congleton is well equipped to work on rock records.
No further details on the album have been released as of yet, as the style Blondie is going for and any other potential collaborators are being kept secret. If their 2017 album is anything to go by, there will likely be a range of different features that help out on the record. Pollinator features appearances from Joan Jett, John Roberts, and Laurie Anderson. It was also co-written by Johnny Marr, Charli XCX, and Dev Hynes.
Marr previously confirmed in an interview with former BBC 6 Music presenter Shaun Keaveny that he had written another song for the band. Whether this will appear on the new album remains to be seen. “I’ve written another new one for the new current record that they’re recording. I don’t know whether it will end up on the album, you never know,” he said, “But they seemed to really like it.”
Stein will undoubtedly be excited to be back in the studio with Harry, given he had to cut his time touring with the band short in 2023 due to health reasons. “I’m sad and frustrated to report that I’m not going out with the next bunch of Blondie touring,” he said on Instagram Stories. “I’ve been dealing with a dumbass condition called Atrial Fibrillation or AFib which is irregular heartbeats, and combined with the meds I take for it I’m too fatigued to deal”.
