Although Billie Eilish has been enjoying a stellar week off the back of her triumphant Tiny Desk set, things took a more dismal turn on Friday night as she was hit in the face by a necklace thrown onto the stage by a fan.

On the evening of December 13th, Eilish was performing at the 20,000-capacity Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. At one point during the show, she was sitting cross-legged on the floor singing the hit ballad from the Barbiesoundtrack, ‘What Was I Made For?’ when the projectile hit her.

Given that the song is a slow-paced, deeply melancholy number, this was a tender moment in the set where the energy was significantly reduced in the room; however, at one point, as fan footage shows, the necklace, which was thrown with some power, hit Eilish in the face. While she looked taken aback by what happened, to her credit, she continued the song undeterred, picked up the necklace, and assertively tossed it to the side of the stage.

Eilish hasn’t commented on the incident at the time of writing, but it’s likely that she may, as she’s already made her thoughts clear on the contemporary trend of fans throwing projectiles on stage.

What has Billie Eilish said about fans throwing objects on stage?

In 2023, the issue of fans throwing objects on stage became a talking point, following several prominent musicians such as Harry Styles, Lil Nas X, and Blackpink’s Lisa being hit by them. On the red carpet for Barbie in early July, both Eilish and her brother and collaborator, Finneas, made their thoughts clear on the matter. The former maintained that it is “out of love” despite being “absolutely infuriating”.

“I’ve been getting hit on stage with things for like literally six years, I don’t know why this is like new,” Eilish said at the Barbie world premiere in Los Angeles. “People just get excited, and it can be dangerous.”

Finneas acknowledged that most fans aren’t trying to hit musicians, with phones, a popular choice, used as projectiles in the hope of getting a photograph. However, his sister noted: “It’s absolutely infuriating when you’re up there.”

“I have mixed feelings about it, because when you’re up there, it blows. But you know it’s out of love, and they’re just trying to give you something,” she continued. “You’re in a vulnerable position, but I’ve been getting hit with stuff for likeyears.”

Finneas added, “Don’t do it — we get it but don’t do it,” with Eilish elucidating, “Don’t throw things on stage, but we love you; it’s very sweet.”

Elsewhere this year, Eilish released her acclaimed third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. In a four-star review, Far Out wrote: “The record is never less than great. This is mostly thanks to a performer at the top of her game, proving herself to be one of the world’s finest and most earnest vocalists, and a songwriter firmly finding her feet, unafraid to be hearteningly honest.”
