Despite retiring from touring in 2023, Elton John has no plans to step back from recording new music with Bernie Taupin providing a fresh update on their upcoming album.
As of yet, details about the forthcoming record have been kept firmly under wraps, and it still hasn’t received a title, release date nor have any tracks been previewed. Nevertheless, following the global success of his farewell tour, anticipation for John’s next move is palpable, and expectations are sky-high for the project.
Last year, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, John had the honour of inducting Taupin into the exclusive club, and used the platform to reveal the pair had recently completed work on a new album in Los Angeles. “We’ve just finished an album in Los Angeles, which is going to surprise the shit out of you,” he remarked.
Despite John’s admission, which hinted at experimentation, no further news regarding the upcoming album has trickled out in recent months. However, while speaking at Other Songs Live at the London Palladium on May 20th, Taupin revealed fans won’t have much longer to wait until it is finally unleashed.
“Elton and I have an album coming out soon. I daren’t say too much about it because I’m under strict orders to keep schtum, but it’s all written and recorded,” he told the audience at the event, according to The Sun.
The songwriting legend continued: “I think it’s quite brilliant and quite contemporary and it will certainly surprise a lot of people and excite a lot of people and hopefully be successful.”
While the remarks provided by Elton and Taupin on the new project have been vague, they both allude to exploring new musical territories which align with modern tastes. Now, it’s a waiting game to see whether the body of work does “surprise the shit” out of fans.
Meanwhile, outside of his work on a new album, John has kept himself occupied since retiring from touring by working on the musicals, The Devil Wears Prada and Tammy Faye.
Furthermore, his husband, David Furnish said they were also mulling over plans for a “catalogue musical”, noting, “We’re always looking at it. I haven’t found anything yet that really covers… I think if we wanted to do it, we would want to do it in a way that was really innovative and really exciting and different.”
Additionally, The Who’s Pete Townshend claimed to Clash Music that John had completed an album with singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, however, he didn’t state whether it was the same album as the one John and Taupin have publicly discussed. The guitarist remarked: “Elton is so fraught with loss at not knowing what to do next. He’s just gone over to LA to make an album with Brandi Carlile. They made an album together in two weeks. He says it’s one of the best things they’ve ever done.”
