(Credits: Far Out / Berlin International Film Festival)
The Berlin Film Festival is one of the most well-respected events in the world of cinema. Alongside Cannes, Venice, Toronto and Sundance, it is considered to be one of the “big five” film festivals, showing hundreds of films each year to thousands of viewers.
It also hands out some highly coveted accolades to the best of those films, many of them including the highest prize, the Golden Bear, decided upon by an international jury.
This year, the international jury has decided on Mati Diop’s documentary Dahomey as the winner of the Golden Bear award. It becomes the second documentary to take home the prize. Meanwhile, the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize went to Hong Sang-soo’s A Traveler’s Needs, while Bruno Dumont’s The Empire took home the Silver Bear Jury Prize.
Sebastian Stan and Emily Watson both take home awards for acting, for their performances in A Different Man and Small Things Like These, respectively. Nelson Carlos De Los Santos Arias takes home the Best Director win for his drama Pepe, while Matthias Glasner’s writing for Dying won him the Best Screenplay award.
Short films such as An Odd Turn and Remains of the Hot Day were celebrated outside the international jury prizes. No Other Land took home the Berlinale Documentary Film Award, with a special metion going to Guillaume Cailleau and Ben Russell’s Direct Action. Find the full list of winners below.
