Chicago band Beach Bunny is back with their first glimpse of new music since 2022. ‘Vertigo’ was released on June 17th, and it’s an upbeat injection of indie pop that is as catchy as it is bouncy.
Quite a lot of songs are described as “bops,” but nothing fits the word more than this new track by Beach Bunny. From the beginning, as the guitar pick hits pressured strings to count in the track, we are thrown into a fast-tempo infusion of fun, a blend of pop, punk, and indie music that demands dancing. Vocalist Lilo Trifilio describes the song as “A bop about self-sabotage, jealousy, and generally spiralling (classic).”
When speaking about the song’s origins, Trifilio stated that she is “On a journey of self-awareness,” and while thinking about the themes that would make up the song on a flight, she came up with the melody. “I wrote this on an aeroplane in my head and tried to demo it in the bathroom very sneakily,” she said, “But aeroplane bathrooms are super loud, so as to not forget how it went, since the audio was trash, I sang it in my head for the entire duration of a four-hour flight.”
The band are just wrapping up their tour supporting Melanie Martinez. While they still have shows in Florida, California, Arizona and Texas to do, they have plans as a headline act later in the year, and this song will make a great companion for some of their solo shows. For instance, they will play with The Greeting Committee in Missouri in August and will perform at Chicago’s Riot Fest.
There have yet to be any details released about whether we can expect more new music from the band, but hopefully, ‘Vertigo’ is the first in what will be an exciting run of tracks. Their most recent release before this song, the album Emotional Creature, was an exciting blend of bedroom pop, Tik-Tok-inspired indie music, and the soundtrack for a romantic comedy.
The album received pretty positive reviews from fans and critics, and the band locked in multiple tour dates as a headline act and filling out support slots. They are undoubtedly keen to create something of the same acclaim, hence why a gap has been left between releases.
This remains a developing story; however, you can listen to the brand-new single ‘Vertigo’ below.
