‘Anora’ director Sean Baker working on next movie: “Don’t expect a Marvel film”

Sean Baker, the director of this year’s Oscar-winning smash hit Anora, has revealed he is working on his next film project, but has warned audiences: “Don’t expect a Marvel movie.”

The director was speaking on the It Happened in Hollywood podcast, in which he said he would take time to consider his next movie, but that it would largely be “more of the same.”

Allaying fears that he could somehow pivot into the realm of superhero blockbusters, Baker said: “It’s not going to happen. I’m intentionally going to stay in the same wheelhouse and with the approximate same budget. I think that I enjoy working in this space of 100 per cent independent.”

Expanding on what this independence means for any of his upcoming projects, he explained: “I’m not working for even a mini studio. I’m making my film independently and then going the old school route of hopefully a bidding war or somebody licensing the movie. I think that’s the only way to have full autonomy and control over your vision. So it’ll be that. Expect more of the same.”

Even if Baker is to continue down a similar directorial route, it will come with a lot of expectation for the filmmaker following the seismic success of Anora over the most recent awards season.

The film garnered five Oscar wins – including ‘Best Director’ for Baker, as well as ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ for Mikey Madison – in addition to taking home the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024.

For the part of lead actor Madison, she is next set to star in Reptilia alongside Kirsten Dunst as her follow-up movie to Anora, after rejecting a role in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars instalment.
