After eight long years of fraught legal disputes, former Hollywood power couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have settled their divorce. The pair finalised the terms and signed off on the agreement on December 30th.

“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time, she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family,” Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, said in a statement.

Simon continued: “This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”

People confirmed the news in an exclusive, with a source close to Jolie, saying: “She doesn’t speak ill of [Pitt] publicly or privately. She’s been trying hard to be light after a dark time.” Pitt’s representatives declined to confirm or comment on the matter.

The ordeal began in 2016 after an alleged physical altercation occurred on a private plane where Pitt was reported to have “choked” one of his children and “struck another in the face.” It was also claimed that the actor “grabbed Jolie by the head and shook her.” Jolie filed for divorce just a few days later. Pitt denies the claims.

In April 2024, the dispute between the pair then took another turn. Jolie’s lawyers labelled a request made by Pitt’s representatives regarding their client’s non-disclosure agreements to be “abusive”.

At that point, the former married couple continued to be trapped in their sticky legal struggle regarding the ownership of a French vineyard, Château Miraval, the $164 million estate they shared. Pitt had previously accused Jolie of selling her portion of shares to a Russian billionaire without his consent through her company, Nouvel. They purchased the property in Provence in 2008.

In general, 2024 saw the legal conflict between the couple hit choppier waters, with Jolie’s lawyers claiming that Pitt behaved like a “petulant child” over the sale.

Earlier in April, Jolie’s legal team filed a motion which they hoped would allow them to release documents they deemed evidence that Pitt would only give her permission to sell her stakes in Miraval if she signed what was dubbed an “expansive” NDA.

In November, Jolie earned a legal victory when a judge in the case ruled that Pitt must disclose documents, such as emails and texts, which Jolie’s lawyer, Paul Murphy, claimed would prove her allegations of abuse against Pitt and “years of cover-up” on his part.

That month, Pitt secured his own victory in the winery dispute when Jolie’s motions to dismiss the lawsuit were rejected.
