Ahead of the 2025 Grammy Awards, set to take place in Los Angeles tonight (February 2nd), ‘Album of the Year’ nominee André 3000 has announced that he will not be attending the ceremony. His debut solo album, New Blue Sun, has been nominated in three separate categories despite being released back in November 2023.

Seeing the former Outkast rapper adopt an entirely new sound, New Blue Sun is among the most prominent new-age spiritual jazz records to be released in recent years. Although the jazz sound of the album was unexpected, particularly for fans of 3000’s previous work with Outkast, it has been incredibly well-received by the musical mainstream, ushering in a renewed interest in spiritual jazz.

Supporting this claim, the record has been nominated in three separate categories: ‘Album of the Year’, ‘Best Alternative Jazz Album’, and the opening track ‘I Swear, I Really Wanted To Make A ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time’ is nominated for ‘Best Instrumental Composition’.

Despite the success of the Grammy-nominated album, André 3000 confirmed via Instagram that he will not be attending the awards ceremony this evening. “Unfortunately, I’m not able to attend the Grammys tomorrow,” he said. “But some of the ‘New Blue Sun’ musicians, friends and supporters will be in attendance.”

The Grammy’s ceremony is due to be scaled back from its usual grandeur, largely as a result of the wildfires which devastated large areas of Los Angeles in January.

Within his statement, André 3000 gave a message of support to the California city, writing, “Our album was conceived and recorded in Los Angeles with the spirit of openness and creative collaboration. We hope that the rebound of Los Angeles is swift and renewing.”

Concluding, the musician shared, “Congrats to all the musicians and collaborators being acknowledged. Keep playing.” His album is set to go up against the likes of Beyoncé, Charli XCX, Chappell Roan, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, and Jacob Collier.
