Adam Driver has revealed he spent two years developing a Star Wars movie with Steven Soderbergh that Disney rejected.
Driver previously starred in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker as Kylo Ren (Ben Solo). However, his character’s fate was sealed in the final movie of the trilogy.
Despite Kylo Ren’s arc in The Rise of Skywalker, Driver was determined to continue the character’s involvement in the Star Wars universe, telling the AP in a new interview, “I always was interested in doing another Star Wars.”
He elaborated, “I had been talking about doing another one since 2021. Kathleen (Kennedy) had reached out. I always said: With a great director and a great story, I’d be there in a second. I loved that character and loved playing him.”
Driver then reached out to Soderbergh with a concept for another movie set after The Rise of Skywalker, which they developed, and got Scott Z Burns to pen a script for which the Marriage Story actor called “one of the coolest (expletive) scripts I had ever been a part of.”
The star continued, “We presented the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea. They totally understood our angle and why we were doing it.” However, Disney weren’t on board with Driver revealing, “We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that.”
The movie was set to be titled The Hunt for Ben Solo, according to Driver.
Meanwhile, Soderbergh said of the project, “I really enjoyed making the movie in my head. I’m just sorry the fans won’t get to see it.”
Star Wars is set to return with Starfighter in 2027. The movie, directed by Shawn Levy, will star Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth, Amy Adams and Simon Bird.
