Hunter S Thompson‘s cause of death has been ruled as suicide for a second time following a new investigation.
In October, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation confirmed they has opened a case review into the death investigation it previously held in 2005.
At the time, they stated that this isn’t due to new evidence coming to light, but the agency had chosen to go ahead with the review following a request from the author’s widow, Anita Thompson.
Now, the second investigation has come to a close, and the agency has again confirmed that the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas author died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home in Woody Creek, Colorado, on February 20th, 2005.
In a new statement, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said, “The CBI’s review did not uncover any new physical evidence, facts, or circumstances to support a conclusion different from the 2005 investigation.”
Additionally, it was confirmed that no foul play took place, continuing, “A review of the original PCSO reports found no information inconsistent with the follow-up interviews or the recent scene examination.”
It concluded, “Original crime scene photographs, recovered by Anita Thompson, were reviewed and corroborated that Thompson’s body was aligned with the bullet trajectory, supporting the finding that the body was not moved or ‘staged’ after death”
Anita Thomson, the author’s widow, has also expressed her gratefulness to the authorities for the second investigation and said that it allows her to finally get closure in regards to her husband’s death.
Her statement reads, “I’m thankful for the kind and thorough work done by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation in their review of this case, and not a single attempt to overstep the ethical boundaries of a technical review, especially under such difficult circumstances.”
Thompson continued, “This allows all of us who loved Hunter to move forward with a clean conscience.”
The author was 67 when he died.
