Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will officially return to the franchise that started it all. They will appear in the upcoming blockbuster, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.
The pair is set to appear in the upcoming prequel movie, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.
So far, the only details shared are that Lawrence will reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen and, as expected, Hutcherson will return as Peeta Mellark.
The forthcoming movie will follow the events of the 50th Hunger Games, while Lawrence and Hutcherson starred in the movie that followed the 74th Hunger Games. Therefore, it is likely that they will star in a flash-forward scene.
The movie boasts an incredible cast. Jesse Plemons will star as young Plutarch Heavensbee, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the initial film series, and Ralph Fiennes as a younger President Snow. Returning actor Kieran Culkin has landed the role of Caesar Flickerman.
Newcomers Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak have landed the two main roles, playing Haynith Abernathy and his girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird. Notably, Francis Lawrence will return to the director’s chair.
Maya Hawke will play Wiress, a former Hunger Games champion turned District 12 mentor. McKenna Grace will portray Maysilee Donner, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. has been cast as Beetee.
Published on March 18th, 2025, Sunrise on the Reaping sold one-and-a-half million copies of the book in its first week on sale in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The movie franchise has been just as successful as the books, with the five films taking in more than $3.3 billion at the global box office.
Recently, Lawrence starred alongside Robert Pattinson in the Lynne Ramsay project Die My Love. Hutcherson recently returned to screens, too, in the Rachel Sennott-fronted series I Love LA.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released on November 20th, 2026.
