Batfans worldwide have been dealt a Christmas hammer blow as Warner Bros has announced The Batman 2 is being delayed yet again. It will now open on October 1st, 2027, a full year after the previous October 2nd, 2026 release date.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the sequel to Matt Reeves’ hugely successful 2022 film will go into production in the third quarter of 2025 and is no longer titled The Batman: Part II. Instead, the project is now listed as “untitled.”
It’s the latest in a line of delays for the movie, which was officially announced in 2022, not long after The Batman made $772million worldwide and received rave reviews from all corners. It was originally pencilled in for 2025 before being pushed back to 2026 and now 2027.
The news caused some fans to panic that there was a problem with the production, and some even theorised that the sequel would never see the light of day. Given the success of the first film, though, not to mention the ecstatic reception given to its spin-off HBO series The Penguin, it would be unlikely that Warner would let the property go away. In truth, there is no conspiracy. The movie will simply be late because writer/director Matt Reeves hasn’t delivered a completed screenplay.
“The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script,” DC Studios head honcho and Superman director James Gunn wrote on Threads. “Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.”
Fans of star Robert Pattinson, who delivered such a unique interpretation of Bruce Wayne and his masked alter-ego in the first film, have reason to be cheerful, though. Warner also shuffled the release dates of some of its other projects, including Bong Joon Ho’s Micky 17, the sci-fi comedy starring Pattinson. It has swapped dates with Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan’s Sinners and will now open a month earlier on March 7th, 2025.
What do we know about The Batman 2?
In an interview with Digital Spy published on Christmas Day, Reeves revealed some titbits about the themes of his highly-anticipated sequel.
“There’s a lot of unrest and there’s a lot of clamouring because of the revelations of what we find out at the end of the [first] movie,” Reeves revealed. “There’s unrest in the streets to say, ‘Well, how could this be?’ The idea that this corruption extends as deep as it extends. In the first movie, Batman views things very simplistically, he sees things in black and white. What he can represent and how he can affect that.”
Reeves continued, “As we enter into the next movie, there’s a lot more grey. There’s a lot more people at odds. There’s a lot more division in the city. It’s a lot more like our world is now; there’s a lot of turmoil because people are in their camps and they’re not communicating. How does Batman fit into that? Where do you fit? It’s not as clear as going, ‘Oh yeah, bad guy. I go after bad guys.’ And when things are in grey, it makes it very hard to be Batman, so this is part of the challenge as we enter it.”
