It’s getting to that time of year when we all start to reflect upon the past 365 days and drum up some resolutions to see us into the new year. For Sir Paul McCartney, who has just finished his incredible Got Back world tour, his new year’s resolution is fairly obvious: “finish a new album”.
McCartney has always been a particularly productive artist but, even at the age of 82, he still shows very few signs of slowing down. His recent shows in London reflected the fact that Macca is still the same incredible musician and performer he always has been, so it makes sense that the songwriter would hope to channel that energy into a new studio project.
Answering fan questions on his official website, McCartney revealed that a new solo record is certainly in the works. “I’ve been working on a lot of songs and have had to put it to the side because of the tour,” the musician wrote. “So, I’m hoping to get back into that and finish up a lot of these songs.”
McCartney concluded, “So, how’s about that? ‘My New Year’s resolution is to finish a new album!’” If the former Beatle does manage to finish and release a new album in 2025, it would be his first since McCartney III in 2020. Overall, though, it would be his 27th studio album either as a solo artist or as part of Wings, excluding the many iconic albums he crafted alongside The Beatles.
McCartney III was an undeniable triumph for the songwriter, marking his first number-one solo album since 1989’s Flowers in the Dirt. The album was also followed up by the McCartney III Imagined album, featuring contributions from the likes of Beck, Khruangbin, and Phoebe Bridgers, among various others – reaffirming the continued relevance of McCartney as a songwriter.
Of course, there are not many confirmed details about this potential new album just yet. As you might expect, McCartney is taking some time to rest and recuperate after his extensive world tour. “I’m one of those guys that loves to overdo decorations, so I need a minute to sit back, relax and enjoy them,” he shared on his website. One can only imagine that McCartney’s house is decked out like an exact replica of the ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ music video around this time of year.
During his recent performance in London, McCartney reunited onstage with his old Beatles bandmate, Ringo Starr, to perform ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. What’s more, Macca has also featured on various Starr solo projects, so perhaps a new album might include contributions from the drummer. Hopefully, by the end of 2025, there will be yet another Paul McCartney album out in the world.
