With the announcement of Jim Carrey’s return to the Sonic The Hedgehog universe, which marks the actors break from retirement, the actor was asked about his thoughts on creating a sequel to The Mask, the 2004 comedy that made a star out of Cameron Diaz and become a global blockbuster. The film earned over $351million at the box office and became one of Carrey’s defining comedic roles, and perhaps this would tempt the actor to return for another instalment.
When asked about this idea, Carrey said, “Oh gosh, you know, it has to be the right idea. If somebody had the right idea, I guess,” Carrey said. “It’s not really about the money. I joke about the money. … But I never know. You can’t be definite about these things. I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, things tend to change.”
While he isn’t sure about returning to his green-faced character, the actor has recently resurfaced from his retirement to reprise his role as Dr Robotnik, while also expressing an interest in returning to The Grinch. The beloved Christmas film was famously challenging for Carrey due to the extensive makeup and prosthetics process that took nearly two and a half hours each day.
However, the actor said he would only return to the character if ‘we could figure out’ a way to reduce the makeup process, something that became extremely time-consuming when it was done for 92 consecutive days.
Carrey expanded on the potential roles, saying, “The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe,” Carrey said. “It was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”
After the development of modern technology, perhaps there is a way for Carrey to return to this character without having to go through an extensive physical transformation, something that would deter many people from returning to the big screen. However, Carrey will be back in cinemas on December 20th for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
