Swedish actor and filmmaker Dolph Lundgren is cancer-free after a long nine-year battle with the disease and medical suggestions that he only had two years to live.

The actor first revealed his cancer diagnosis in May last year, revealing that doctors found a cancerous tumour in his kidney in 2015. In a recent video shared on his social media, Lundgren said he would be shortly undergoing treatment to remove “the last dead tumour.”

Following the video, he posted a comment to give another update, saying that he was “finally cancer free” and thanked fans for their support over the years, saying he was filled with “gratefulness” and “excitement.”

In the original video, he also shared additional details about the nature of his diagnosis, saying that he was undergoing a lung ablation, adding, “Since there are no cancer cells in my body anymore, then I guess I’ll be cancer-free, so I’m looking forward to this procedure. It’s been a rough ride and really taught me how to live in the moment and enjoy every moment of life. It’s the only way to go.”

The actor later shared a video update on Instagram Stories, thanking people for support again, explaining that it will “take a little more to break me” and adding a playful reference to a quote from Rocky IV.

Previously, Lundgren explained on In Depth with Graham Bensinger that he had been told he had “two to three years” left but felt that given the severity, there was a likelihood that “it was less.” At first, he kept a close eye on it with scans every six months, but an MRI scan in 2020 revealed that more tumours had formed.

Doctors performed surgery to remove six more tumours when they found another in his liver, which forced him to reevaluate his situation entirely. “At that point, it started to hit me that this is kind of something serious,” he said.

Still, in keeping with the drive many of his characters share, the actor felt eager to push on and acted for Expendables 4 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom while undergoing treatment. “I had signed on to Expendables 4 and the sequel to Aquaman, with both pictures shooting in London in the fall of 2021,” he said, adding, “They had a really good guy there who was put in charge of my care.”
