After the release of his new album clashed with a surprise LP drop from Kendrick Lamar, Father John Misty has shared a new track on his Instagram titled ‘God’s Trash’.
Father John Misty released his sixth album, Mahashmashana, on Friday, November 22nd. In a review, Far Out‘s Lucy Harbron awarded the record four-and-a-half stars. “Father John Misty singing about the collapse of the modern world is like Elvis belting out a love song,” she concluded, “And as the artist gathers up all the best bits of every direction he’s ever taken, this new one is fueled by uncompromised greatness.”
Despite the positive reception to Mahashmashana, almost every release this week has been overshadowed by Kendrick Lamar‘s surprise album, GNX, which also dropped on November 22nd.
Father John Misty, also known as Joshua Tillman, took to X to joke about the clash. “Not now I’m furiously scribbling my seeming response to,” he shared, later adding, “It’s okay the only other times it’s happened was 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2022.”
Although their actual release dates haven’t always clashed, Kendrick and Father John Misty do seem to have coordinating release schedules, each releasing new records in 2012, 2015, 2017, 2022 and, now, 2024.
Tillman then shared a screenshot of a chat with a friend, in which he joked, “Dropping a new track on Kendrick’s ass.” He then took to Instagram to share the new song, which many fans are joking is a diss track aimed at Kendrick. “God’s trash, there’s no law but the old law baby,” Tillman sings over soft guitar strums, accompanying the track with an image of a pair of old shoes and two receipts.
Kendrick’s beef with Drake took over the rap world this summer, with each artist aiming diss tracks at one another, spawning the iconic ‘Not Like Us’ in the process. Tillman’s posts seem to parody the feud between the two.
Tillman is waiting until the new year to take Mahashmashana on the road. He plans to play across North America beginning next February. After taking to stages in Toronto, Boston, New York, and more, he will embark upon a European tour later in the year.
Spring will see Father John Misty perform across Europe, including a show at the O2 Apollo in Manchester and La Cigale in Paris. He will also play two shows at two different in London, taking to the Royal Albert Hall Stage on April 15th before bringing the tour to a close at EartH Theatre on April 16th.
Mahashmashana by Father John Misty is out now. GNX by Kendrick Lamar is out now.
