English actor Josh O’Connor has been officially confirmed to star in a new movie by blockbuster legend Steven Spielberg, joining the likes of Emily Blunt and Colin Firth on the call sheet.
Between his widely praised performance as the Prince of Wales in The Crown and a more recent role in Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, O’Connor has had a busy few years, picking up award wins and acclaim along the way.
Now, he’s set to venture into the world of blockbusters in his first collaboration with Spielberg, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
O’Connor isn’t the only actor currently attached to the mysterious project. Emily Blunt is also set to appear in the new Spielberg film. Like O’Connor, Blunt has also had an exciting couple of years, linking up with Christopher Nolan for the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer and recently starring opposite Ryan Gosling in The Fall Guy.
Colin Firth is also set to star in the new Spielberg feature. Firth has had a slightly quieter few years than his soon-to-be co-stars, with a brief cameo in Raine Allen-Miller’s Rye Lane last year and a narrator role in Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son earlier in 2024.
Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo, the latter earned an Academy Award nomination for his part in Rustin, are also set to star.
What do we know about Steven Spielberg’s new movie?
So far, little information has been shared about Spielberg’s new project aside from the increasingly star-studded cast list. The director has created the story, but David Koepp, a close collaborator of Spielberg’s, has penned the script. Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce the project.
Koepp has worked on several beloved blockbusters, including the Jurassic Park series alongside Spielberg. He also wrote the original Mission: Impossible film, Sam Raimi’s take on Spider-Man, and the 2017 reboot of The Mummy.
Krieger is also a close collaborator of Spielberg’s, having previously worked with the director on Ready Player One and West Side Story.
Plot details for the film are being kept under wraps, although the film is reportedly in the sci-fi genre. Spielberg’s last film, The Fabelmans, arrived in 2022 and sat in a completely different realm, an ode to his love for filmmaking.
There is still a year or two to wait before Spielberg’s latest film hits the big screen, although it seems set for summer blockbuster status. A release date has been provisionally set for May 15th, 2026.
