Ahead of the US Presidential election on November 5th, Kick-Ass and The Peripheral star Chloë Grace Moretz shared an impassioned statement on Instagram. In it, she supported Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris and bravely came out as gay.

Moretz was born on February 10th, 1997, in Atlanta, Georgia. She began her career as a child actor, appearing in early roles such as The Amityville Horror (2005) and the popular drama Desperate Housewives. This period also included her parts in 500 Days of Summer and the following year’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid. However, 2010 marked a pivotal year for Moretz as she gained widespread recognition for her standout performances as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass and as the young vampire Abby in Let Me In.

Throughout the decade, she continued to develop her craft and establish herself in Hollywood by appearing in titles such as Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, and the 2013 remake of Stephen King’s Carrie. Her recent endeavours as a fully-fledged leading actor include 2023’s Nimona and the 2022 Amazon science fiction series The Peripheral.

Moretz, a self-identified feminist, has long been a public supporter of LGBT rights and issues faced by the community, a stance influenced by having two gay brothers. In 2016, when speaking to the Huffington Post, she questioned why people should have to come out. She said she didn’t just hate the fact people are against the LGBT community but that they are then forced to come out and put tags on themselves.

“There should never even be a question,” she said. “It doesn’t matter. It’s not an issue. Why are we even living in a society where we have to answer those questions? That’s a question that shouldn’t be asked.”

Moretz has also always been vocal about which side of politics her beliefs fall on. In 2016, she supported Hilary Clinton’s campaign and appeared at the Democratic National Convention. Now, she has made a passionate post supporting Kamala Harris and explaining why it is vital to her as a gay woman and the rest of the LGBT community. Her coming out follows a long period of speculation from the outside world, with her romantically linked to model Kate Harrison since 2018.

Sharing a picture of an “I voted early” sticker on Instagram, she wrote in the caption: “I voted early and I voted for Kamala Harris. There is so much on the line this election. I believe the government has no right over my body as a woman and that the decisions over my body should come ONLY from myself and my doctor.”

The actor maintained that she believes Harris “will protect that for us”, continuing, “I believe in the need for legal protections that protects the LGBTQ+ community as a gay woman.”

She added: “We need protections in this country and to have access to the care we need and deserve.”

She then urged her followers to get a plan together to visit their local polling station with friends.

What other celebrities have endorsed Kamala Harris?

Despite former Pink Floyd leader Roger Waters recently posting online that Harris and her Republican rival, Donald Trump, are “evil beyond all imagination” due to their stances on the Israel and Palestine issue, many famous creatives have thrown their support behind the Democrat in an election that is described as being pivotal for the country’s future.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that ‘The Boss’, Bruce Springsteen, would headline Harris rallies in swing states, which kicked off on October 24th in Macon, Georgia. Alongside the New Jersey heartland rocker, the likes of Stevie Nicks, Eminem, Beyoncé, Willie Nelson, Neil Young and The Avengers cast, including Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson, have endorsed her.

In a statement posted on his website, Young wrote: “Kamala Harris will take on the billionaire class and make them pay their fair share of taxes. She will not owe them any favors. She is a kind, considerate American. Cast your vote for a beautiful future for your family. Kamala Harris for President.”
