Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Evans endorse Kamala Harris

Less than a week before US election takes place on November 5th, the Avengers cast, including Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson, have assembled in support of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

In a video posted on Halloween (October 31st), a gathering of Marvel’s biggest actors encouraged the American people to vote for Harris. In addition to Downey Jr and Johansson, Chris Evans, Don Cheadle, Mark Ruffalo, Paul Bettany, and Danai Gurira all made winking nods to their respective characters in the MCU — Black Widow, Iron Man, Captain America, War Machine, Hulk, Vision, and Okoye — over the course of 90 fun, informative seconds.

In the new clip, the superhero stars try to develop a catchphrase for Harris in a tongue-in-cheek manner and wind up settling on the decidedly dubious “Down with Democracy.” It then transitions into a Marvel Comics-style campaign video endorsing Harris and her pick for Vice President, Tim Walz, before concluding with a plea for citizens to vote on November 5th.

Johansson revealed to Vanity Fair that the video was her idea, and she found corralling all her co-stars into playing ball wasn’t unlike the experience of making the MCU films. She smiled, “It just immediately turned into people trying to one-up each other with one-liners. Robert and Mark, they’re bickering like two old ladies. And, of course, I’m the person that’s just trying to organise everybody. It’s very similar to what our dynamic is in the films.”

Getting the gang back together simultaneously to shoot the video was also a logistical nightmare, as Johansson explained, “Everybody is so busy and insanely spread out. Chris is shooting a movie in Bulgaria. Robert is currently treading the planks on Broadway. Mark is doing a movie. Danai is canvassing in Atlanta. I was in the Grand Canyon. Don is, I don’t know, probably on a golf course somewhere. But we were able to get everybody on a Zoom all together at the same time, which was crazy and hilarious.”

Johansson revealed that it all started when she reminded her friends in the MCU WhatsApp group chat that they could make a difference for Harris. She suggested to the cohort, “We’ve got a lot of powerful people on this thread, and it would be great to unite in hopefully creating a bit of a viral moment for Kamala.” She then added, “It was wonderful to feel like everybody was able to assemble around it, and hopefully it will engage our fans in the process of voting.”

When Ruffalo – a staunch Democrat – posted the video to X, he attached a stirring message. It read, “Don’t sit this one out. It’s the one where we will lose big: Project 2025, women’s reproductive rights, climate change, LGBTQIA+ rights, public education, student debt relief, Affordable Care Act, Social Security, and as of today, life-saving vaccines. This shit is real, and it’s going to come for you.”

Who else has endorsed Kamala Harris?

During Harris’ presidential campaign, a host of celebrities have publicly endorsed her. Heavy hitters like Bruce Springsteen, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Leonardo DiCaprio, Oprah Winfrey, LeBron James, and Madonna have all lent their support.

Additionally, despite being a former Republican politician, Arnold Schwarzenegger endorsed Harris, posting to X, “I will always be an American before I am a Republican. That’s why, this week, I am voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. I’m sharing it with all of you because I think there are a lot of you who feel like I do. You don’t recognise our country. And you are right to be furious.”
