Marika Hackman has provided her take on Boygenius‘ ‘Not Strong Enough’, which appeared on their debut album, The Record, last year.
In a new live session, Hackman covered the indie folk track accompanied by a singular acoustic guitar. Without any additional instrumentation, the stripped back performance allows Hackman’s gorgeous vocals and Boygenius’ heartbreaking lyrics to come to the forefront.
Hackman delivered the performance and ode to her fellow folk favourites at Crouch End Studios in London for The Line of Best Fit. She had reportedly playing the track in the run-up to the release of her fourth studio record Big Sigh earlier this year.
In a four-star review of Hackman’s latest offering, Far Out‘s Lucy Harbron declared the record her magnum opus and “a prime example of what happens when you let a talented artist take the wheel and keep control of their work.”
“As she digs her fingers into the guts of a feeling, dissecting moments of heartbreak, denial and lust, she tears them apart until they feel fascinatingly new and even more brutal than before,” she enthused, “With each and every detail of the record written, performed and controlled by Hackman, even the most minute inclusions are another cohesive and beautiful extension of the whole.”
Meanwhile, Boygenius enjoyed success at this year’s Grammy awards following the release of their debut. The trio took home the title for ‘Best Alternative Music Album’, and even received a nomination for ‘Album of the Year’.
They also won ‘Best Rock Song’ and ‘Best Rock Performance’ for ‘Not Strong Enough’. The song was nominated for ‘Record of the Year’, but missed out to ‘Flowers’ by Miley Cyrus.
