Hold tight Sam Smith fans because you’ll probably have brand new music from the man himself this time next week.
The 25-year-old singer-songwriter practically disappeared from the limelight after winning an Academy Award for his James Bond theme ‘Writing’s on the Wall’, but he’s coming back. And soon.
Announcing an imminent return on Instagram, he wrote: “Thank you for being so patient and for letting me have the past year to really escape into my mind & write music so freely. I feel so rejuvenated and have so many stories I can’t wait to tell you… The wait is so nearly over.
“Something is coming very very very soon. I am scared & excited at the same time. I’ve poured my soul and heart into this record.”
And by “very, very, very soon”, it looks like Sam means next week. Hours after his announcement, he started posting photos billboards in London and Los Angeles promoting the date September 8.
In case you need the pieces put together: September 8 falls on a Friday, which is the day artists now traditionally drop new music. The inclusion a Spotify logo on the billboards only adds fuel to the fire.
If indeed a new album is on the way, Sam will certainly have lty standards to live up to. His debut In the Lonely Hour went seven-times platinum in addition to earning three Brit Awards and four Grammys.
As far back as the autumn 2014, Sam was telling Digital Spy that he had a distinct vision in mind for the follow-up to his breakthrough record.
“I’m a complete control freak so I’ve already decided on the artwork and title to the album, which will change obviously,” he admitted. “I think I will always be so scared not doing this as a career, so the thought just sitting back and enjoying the ride, and then late next year someone going, ‘Right, now we need to do a] second album’, and me not knowing what the f**k to do… I couldn’t do that.
“I did my first writing session a few weeks ago. I feel like I’ve already got a possible song, which I love. I’ve got a title, which I think I love. I don’t know what I want to talk about yet, y’know.
“I’m not in a relationship, but I’m dating. But I don’t know if I want to pressure myself to get into a relationship to write an album, so there’s loads options.”
By this time next week, we should have an idea if the return Sam Smith will live up to the singer’s own hype. In the meantime, enjoy this classic:
