The nominations for the European Film Awards were announced on November 5th, featuring a line-up full of the festival season’s buzziest titles.

Jacques Audiard’s musical crime comedy Emilia Pérez and Pedro Almodovar’s The Room Next Door lead the charge with four nominations each. Other nominees include Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig and Magnus von Horn’s The Girl With the Needle, both of which have three nominations each.

The European Film Awards cover 19 categories and have been presented annually since 1988. They are restricted to European productions with European producers, directors, and actors. Last year’s awards saw the triumph of Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, which won six awards including Best Film, Best Actress for Sandra Hüller, and Best Director.

Other titles that made the nominations list this year include Coralie Fargeat’s much talked about body horror film The Substance, which is up for Best Screenwriter and Best Film.

There are 15 nominees for ‘Best Film’ and five nominations each for documentary, actress, actor, screenwriter, and director. Other categories include animated feature, composer, comedy, production designer, and short film.

In addition to the competitive categories, Italian actor Isabella Rosellini will receive the European Achievement in World Cinema Award, a lifetime achievement award following her lengthy career in Europe and elsewhere. Her credits include David Lynch’s Blue Velvet and this year’s papal thriller, Conclave. Previous recipients of the award include Czech director Miloš Forman, French actor Isabelle Huppert, and Danish director Susanne Bier.

In the acting categories, Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón is up against Tilda Swinton for The Room Next Door, Renate Reinsve for Armand, and Trine Dyrholm and Vic Carmen Sonne for The Girl with the Needle.

Meanwhile, in the men’s category is Daniel Craig for Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, Franz Rogowski for Andrea Arnold’s Bird, Ralph Fiennes for Conclave, Lars Eidinger for the German comedy drama Dying, and Abou Sangare for the French drama Souleymane’s Story.
